Monster Squad Star Andre Gower Fundraises in Wake of Heart Attack

Andre Gower was the star of The Monster Squad, a movie I love. (In case you missed it, I talked about my love for the kiddie monster flick in my Wolfman’s Got Nards review, which Gower directed.) While Gower has been fortunate enough not to succumb to the typical child actor issues, he’s recently had other trouble. Now he needs our help.

This past Saturday, Gower was playing tennis with a friend. He’s healthy and active, so when he starting feeling poorly, he didn’t worry. He assumed at first that his blood sugar was low. The symptoms he was feeling–dizziness and nausea–seemed relatively mild, after all. As he wasn’t experiencing the more well-known side effects, like chest pain, he didn’t immediately assume he was in severe distress. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what was happening.

Gower was in the middle of a massive heart attack. Thankfully, his tennis partner was a former paramedic, who recognized the danger. And through a series of serendipitous events, Gower made it to treatment quickly. Just minutes made the life-or-death difference for him. The doctors were able to save his life and place a temporary pacemaker to help regulate his heartbeat.

However, while the United States has world-class medical treatment, you probably already know the downside. It’s also incredibly expensive. Along with the treatment for Gower’s massive heart attack comes a massive bill. And that’s in addition to the fact that he won’t be able to work for a while.

Friends Launched GoFundMe for Gower’s Plight

In order to help Gower bear the costs of his healthcare and recovery, family friends have organized a fundraiser. Through GoFundMe, they’re hoping to raise $250,000. That might seem like an insurmountable sum, but the fundraiser is already moving fast. In less than 20 hours, for example, they’ve already raised over $30,000 (as of press time).

And you can help. Through the GoFundMe page, you can donate to alleviate some of Gower’s burden. Donations can be as little as $5, by the way. It’s a terrible thing that this is what our healthcare system forces us into doing, but at least we’ve got each other. So join the squad.

We, of course, hope that Gower’s recovery is as quick and painless as possible. You can also share your well-wishes for Gower’s recovery on our social media or in these comments.
