Lovecraft Country on HBO will not be renewed for a second season, making it the latest woke, social-justice-themed show to be canceled.  Deadline is reporting that HBO has decided to cancel the Misha Green series, which was related to the works of H.P. Lovecraft in name only. The show, which was based on the novel of the same name, blended horror and science fiction to examine the Jim Crow era while also making anachronistic references to contemporary events, such as Eric Garner’s killing. While the series was a corporate media darling because of its portrayal of America as a racist nation teeming with white nationalists. It also demonized cops by portraying them as part of a strange, homicidal cult known as the ‘Sons of Adam’.

HBO did not provide an explanation for why the show was canceled, but they issued the following statement: “We will not be moving forward with a second season of Lovecraft Country. We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey.”

The period-horror series launched last August and climbed to 1.5 million viewers becoming the highest watched new episode of an original series for HBO Max on it’s first day of release. And while season one of the series the featured Jurnee Smollett and Jonathan Majors had a novel to follow, from author Matt Ruff, season two would’ve been completely new material that Green and a team of writers began working on back in February. Ultimately the network decided not to move forward with the series, but we can guess why.

After HBO’s announcement, Misha Green posted her concept for the second season, which would have been dubbed “Supremacy”. The United States would have been divided into four different regions in the second season, including the “New Negro Republic” and the “Whitelands.” In another tweet, Green stated that the “Whitelands” would have been populated by zombies.

Looks like HBO made the right decision. Lovecraft Country was co-executive produced by J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele.
